Advanced breast cancer treatment is still being developed by scientists around the world. Due to the tremendous number of women annually that get breast cancer, this topic of conversation is often discussed at medical seminars and in laboratories.
There will be approximately 200,000 women that get breast cancer this year, but of those women, about 40,000 will die from it.
This type of breast cancer can be known as terminal breast cancer, advanced breast cancer, or metastatic breast cancer. While these names are usually interchangeable, some difference may be recognized among them.
Advanced breast cancer is when the body has already begun spreading the cancerous cells to other locations within the body. This is usually known as stage four or five and is known as metastasis.
This means that the cancer cells have reproduced themselves to such a degree that they are no longer contained only in the breasts, but they have moved to the lymph nodes and other areas of the body, such as the liver, bones, or marrow.
The problem with breast cancer is that it is able to spread to almost any other part of the body, due to its unique location and the number of body systems that it is associated with.
Although the options for breast cancer treatment are few, there are some to consider.
First of all, surgery is usually an option for breast cancer. Usually, the doctors can remove the tumor or cyst and get rid of most or all of the cancer. Often, radiation or chemotherapy will be used in conjunction with the surgery.
Next, chemotherapy is the most well known of the types of treatments available. This requires regular visits over a regular period of time to break down and destroy the number of cancerous cells.
Then, there is radiation, which is usually done in large doses over a couple times. This can be accomplished through either outside radiation or inner radiation, depending on the type of cancer.
Advanced breast cancer treatment options are continuing to increase as doctors and scientists research the various possibilities that still remain.
